A Reef Fishing Experience

by Lee Smith

Any noteworthy experience is about the adventure. When it comes to fishing, the events of your trip will create the memorable stories that you will share for the rest of your life.

The Florida Keys Fishing ExperienceWith your first step on board the War Bird, your journey begins. The Captain and first mate prepare the boat for departure assuring that everything is stowed away and prepared for an active day of fishing. The engines are started and the ropes that held the boat in place are released. The boat moves slowly from the docks as the vessel begins it’s journey to the sea. You find yourself experiencing the excitement of leaving the docks, while your thoughts of what the day may bring flow through your mind.

As you pull out of the harbor to the low hum of the engines, you watch the scenery as it passes by. You notice the thickets of mangroves with their roots plunging into the saltwater, the flying marine birds searching for a morning meal, and the quiet stillness of the channel waters as the boat slowly makes its way towards the ocean. The blue skies are alive with billowing white clouds spanning the horizon.

Once you hit the open waters, you notice the smell of the salt air on the breeze while traveling out of the marked channels to the ocean reefs. The color of the ocean water begins to turn clear blue as your trip moves closer to the edges of the Gulf Stream where the coral reefs rise from the ocean floor creating the perfect place to fish before the continental shelf drops off into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean.

Once the Captain announces that he found one of his favorite fishing spots, the fishing lines are cast into the crystal clear waters where you can almost see the fish swimming along the ocean bottom below the boat. The excitement kicks in when you hear the gears of the first reel scream as something grabs the baited hook – everyone knows a fish is on! People scramble, you hold on to your rod as it begins to bend towards the side of the boat and try to reel in the line as the fight begins. Everyone is helping and cheering you on while you battle with an unknown creature of the deep.

The excitement reaches a thrilling uproar as you grapple with this fish on a bending rod, trying to reel this enormous creature closer to the boat. The struggle of fighting something that does not want to be caught, seeing the size of your prey through the clear blue water coming to the surface and the final achievement of landing your catch, completes the battle with you as the winner. As you stand over your prize, you realize how much effort went into this contest of wills.

You just created your own captivating Florida Keys adventure. These are the types of stories that become priceless.
