12-Month Season on Trout Not This Year

However, the proposed final rules would not take effect until Feb. 1.

Trout season closes south of Fred Howard Causeway near Dunedin in November and December, so the impact of the rule for recreational fishermen wouldn’t apply until late in 2012.

The FWC’s proposal to increase the daily commercial limit from 75 to 150 for two fishermen and allow seine nets is creating controversy. The Snook Foundation is running a poll where anglers can weigh in on the proposed changes, and will present the results at the meeting. The poll is online at www.snookfoundation.org/news/fishing/473-trout-fishery-poll.html.

KINGFISH DOUBLE

Larry Mastry boated four kingfish Wednesday in just 18 feet off St. Pete Beach, including a doubleheader with kings weighing 30 and 27 pounds.

Kingfish aren’t going gangbusters yet, but with the Gulf water temperature falling 5-6 degrees in the past week to 69, the fall run is picking up steam.

The midweek bite improved from Saturday, when only 10 kings up to 35 pounds were caught in the Suncoast Kingfish Classic out of Madeira Beach.

Mastry was slow-trolling big greenbacks around pods of Spanish mackerel, which were 3-6 pounds.
