Big numbers, big seas for Day 2 of Pirates Cove Sailfish Classic

PORT SALERNO — Nine was the big number for Day 2 in the 24th annual Pirates’ Cove Sailfish Classic.

Two boats, Della with Capt. Eddie Wheeler and Lo Que Sea with Capt. Glenn Cameron, were the big movers on Saturday, each totaling nine releases on the day, and 15 and 14 respectively for the tournament.

“It was a little rougher than yesterday and it started slow for us” said Wheeler, whose anglers brought nine of the team’s 11 total sailfish to the boat Saturday to move into third place. “We didn’t get our first bite for an hour and a half or so … We picked away at them all day, our anglers did a great job today.”

Wheeler fished south off Jupiter and reported action as far out as 160 feet and as close as 75 feet.

“It was very crowded down there today,” Wheeler said. “We were close, maybe 8 or 9 miles out.”

Sitting just five releases behind the lead boat, Big Oh with 20 releases, Wheeler and his crew plan on going out and doing their best Sunday.

“I hope we can keep up the good ratio and get a little lucky,” he said.

The top two spots on the leaderboard stayed the same with Capt. Ronnie Fields aboard Big Oh recording seven releases for a two-day total of 20 to maintain a slim one release lead over second-place boat Krazy Salts.

Capt. Keith Greenberg and his crew aboard Krazy Salts also released seven sails Saturday and have 19 total for the tournament.

Big Oh also leads the 10 boats fishing in the Treasure Coast Sailfish Championship. Cowpoke with Capt. Mike Brady stands second with 13 sailfish, followed by Bone Shaker and Capt. Scott Fawcett with 11.

The Championship is a demanding series fished through the course of the Classic, the Light Tackle Sailfish Tournament and the Pelican Yacht Club Invitational Billfish Tournament.

The tournament concludes Sunday with teams again likely to endure rough seas throughout the day, but it won’t be as uncomfortable as long as the fishing is good.

Tournament radio operator Beth Davis is posting catches on the tournament’s real time scoring page found at www.piratescovesailfishclassic.com.

New this year is also a download for a Pirates Cove Sailfish Classic iPhone app for scores, standings, schedule and more.
