Bone Shaker edges Outlaw for Saturday daily in Light Tackle Sailfish Tournament

PORT SALERNO — The crackle of the VHF radio Saturday afternoon featured a two-boat duel on the second day of the Light Tackle Sailfish Tournament. The 21-boat fleet’s two hottest teams of the day, Bone Shaker and Outlaw, each finished the day with eight sailfish releases, but it was the dynamics of the angling teams that really made the battle interesting.

It wasn’t just Bone Shaker vs. Outlaw Saturday, it was also Wichers and Wichers vs. Wichers and Wichers.

Tom Wichers, 52, of Rocky Point and son Ian, 20, are part of the team working hard to help stake Outlaw to the tournament’s lead with 17 catches in two days. Tom’s other two sons, Sky, 18, and Van, 15, are half the angling team aboard Bone Shaker that lifted the team from also-ran status to contender with 10 fish overall.

Capt. Scott Fawcett steered Bone Shaker owner Joe Lehner, mate and angler Kyle Francis and the younger two Wichers boys to doubleheaders at 10:46 and 2:13 along with four singles. The team’s eighth fish of the day was caught at 3:16.

But Outlaw led the field most of the day scoring two doubles of its own at 8:59 and 2:25. Captain and owner Neil Subin led anglers Brian Schmidt, Bob Pelosi and the two Wichers men were gunning for the team’s first daily award this season, but needed an overtime catch by Pelosi at 3:32 to end up tying Bone Shaker.

Fawcett said his team began’s its day off the Loran Tower in Hobe Sound and finished up just east of St. Lucie Inlet in about 130 feet of water. The rainy, cloudy conditions made for difficulty seeing fish and hard for fish to see baits.

“Whenever the sun came out, we made a dash for the sunny spot and it seemed to help us,” Fawcett said.

Subin is not about to get confident with three-fish lead said the fleet is so talented that just about any boat can still rise through the standings Sunday and win the tournament outright.

“Our anglers were at their best today — I feel fortunate to have such good ones,” said Subin of Sewall’s Point. “There’s no one fishing in this tournament that can be counted out. I’ve seen a 10-fish deficit overcome before by a winner.”

Big Oh with Capt. Ronnie Fields and anglers Gray Ingram, Ben Horning, Jimmy Fields and Skip Smith topped the field Friday and stand second with 14 catches. Rough n’It with Capt. Ed Nicolace and anglers Tom Donnick, Sebastian Blackman, Scott Lambeth and Hans Kraaz stand third with 12. Bone Shaker, Cowpoke and Chasin Tail are next with 10 apiece.

As for Saturday, Tom Wichers said it was plenty of fun going head-to-head against the boat with two of his sons aboard.

“It’s what makes these tournaments a lot of fun for us, because we get to fish on different boats,” Wichers said. “Plus I’m really good friends with Joe and will get to see him later. The camaraderie in these events is just the best.”

The fleet will fish Sunday until 3:30 p.m. returning to the Manatee Pocket by 5 p.m. The awards dinner will be at Mariner Sands Country Club. Tournament radio operator Bonnie Powell is posting catches on the tournament’s real time scoring page found at www.stuartsailfishclub.com.
