South Florida fishing report

“We’ve been fishing every day, but it’s been rough,” said Capt. Skip Dana of the Helen S and Fish City Pride drift boats at Hillsboro Inlet. Anglers caught a handful of yellowtail snappers and a few groupers. Private boats had a few sailfish and dolphin. Capt. Chip Sheehan of Chips Ahoy said some dolphin were biting off Boynton Beach Inlet and some sailfish were caught to the north, but most boats have not been offshore because of the conditions. The good news is that seas will be much calmer Friday through Sunday.

Fishing report

LAKE OKEECHOBEE

Bass fishing continues to be excellent, with winning tournament stringers routinely topping 30 pounds for five fish. The fish were biting along the outside grass lines from the North Shore to Pelican Bay. Speckled perch were biting in the Kissimmee River.

EVERGLADES/FRESHWATER

Capt. Alan Zaremba reported that the fishing for largemouth and peacock bass slowed a little this week. Peacocks were biting jerkbaits such as floating Rapalas and largemouths in Everglades canals were biting plastic stick worms. Bass were scattered on the flats at Everglades Holiday Park.

SOUTH FLORIDA INSHORE

Capt. Brian Sanders was catching lots of redfish using DOA glow shrimp around the outside islands and river mouths south of Chokoloskee. Sea trout up to 5 pounds also were biting.

SOUTH FLORIDA OFFSHORE

PIERS

Catches this week included Spanish mackerel, kingfish, mutton snappers, blue runners and bonitos.

THE KEYS

Fishing for sailfish and dolphin has been hot and cold, with the fish biting great one day and not so good the next. More and more kingfish were biting on the reefs. Some mutton snappers and black groupers also were biting.
