Big second day boosts Get Lit in Mayor’s Cup fishing tournament

Through a trying weekend of fishing, the crew of Get Lit — skippered by Quinton Dierterly — persevered to win the Mayor’s Cup Tournament in Coconut Grove and a hefty $54,170 bounty.

“Wind, no wind, rain — we had it all,” Dierterly said. “We put up the kites for a while, then no wind. We switched to helium and then the rain started. Then we put out a flat line. The crew was working like a pit crew. We had a couple of free jumpers. We just tried to stay in good position. If other boats were catching fish, we tried to get in position with them.”

Get Lit, a leader in the sports fishing circuit, won the Mayor’s Cup for the second time. The team also had a phenomenal weekend at the Silver Sailfish Derby, Jan. 5-7.

Get Lit released nine sailfish Sunday to go with Saturday’s haul of seven for a total of 16 releases and 1,600 points.

“I am mostly just reeling in the fish,” Get Lit crew member Bill Danko said. “The crew is doing all the work.”

Danko had been the lead angler throughout most of the tournament until late competition with fellow crew member Peter Miller.

Miller pulled in his last fish just 10 seconds before Danko to take the lead position with six sails released.

Kimbuktu, which led after the first day, did not release any sails Sunday.

Wound Up finished second with 12 releases to earn $8,840, while the Crook and Crook crew came in third in the big boat division with nine sails released.

Small boat: Night Prowler 1100, Kimbuktu 800, J’s Crew 800.
