Bone Shaker, Rough N It making moves on Pelican’s first day

The cold, crisp air made it hard for sailfish anglers to get out of bed Wednesday morning before dawn. But by the time the teams aboard 17 sportfishing boats left the protection of the Fort Pierce Inlet, a seawater splash in the face likely woke participants more effectively than a shot of Lectra-Shave.

Capt. Scott Fawcett of Bone Shaker with owner Joe Lehner and angler-brothers Van Wichers and Sky Wichers, all of Stuart, opened up the early lead in the 32nd annual Pelican Yacht Club Invitational Billfish Tournament with six sailfish releases by noon. So far, 57 fish have been caught on what is proving to be a pretty good day for sailfish action.

The tournament has 29 boats registered, but 12 teams chose to ride out the first day at the dock for a variety of reasons. Teams will fish any three of the four days between Wednesday and Saturday, choosing a lay day at each team’s discretion.

The two boats atop the Treasure Coast Sailfish Championship series – Big Oh with Capt. Ronnie Fields with 43 releases, and Cowpoke with Capt. Mike Brady with 39 releases – are both idle Wednesday and will duke it out in bow to bow fishing action for three straight days.

Bone Shaker has been able to gain ground, but the two Championship boats among the fleet of 10 that are capitalizing Wednesday are Rough N IT with Capt. Ed Nicolace with five releases and Chasin Tail with Capt. Rob Valko also with five. That gives Rough N It 38 releases and Chasin Tail 36.
