Outdoor briefs:Father, son team win LERA tourney

The father-son team of Jimmy and Ryan Blount of Rockledge won the LERA Bass Club’s December tournament on Lake Kissimmee.

Twelve teams competed on Dec. 18.

The Blounts overcame cold weather and battery problems on their boat to bring the tournament’s only five-fish limit to the scales. Their total was 9.82 pounds.

Eric Amos and Gary Brill of Titusville were second with four fish totaling 8.23 pounds. Alan Elder of Melbourne and Wayne Smith of Palm Bay weighed four fish totaling 8.10 pounds to finish third. Elder punctuated his effort with a 2.95-pounder to claim big bass honors.

Grouper season closures near

The season closure of shallow-water grouper in Atlantic state waters begins today.

Federal managers are working on a plan to further protect gag grouper, which they claim is overfished and undergoing overfishing in the Gulf. The state will revisit state gag grouper management efforts in February once federal rules are solidified.

Season closures for red and gag grouper, as well as other shallow-water groupers, also are in effect. In Atlantic state waters, including Monroe County, the season closes today and reopens May 1. Shallow-water grouper season closes Feb. 1 in Gulf state waters and reopens April 1.

Shallow water groupers in Gulf state waters include gag, red, black, yellowfin and yellowmouth groupers; scamp; and rock and red hind. In Atlantic state waters, they include tiger grouper, coney and graysby.
