Sailfish still snapping for tournament anglers

The bite was about three miles off Jensen Beach on Thursday. The numbers were on par with last week’s incredible action.

After all, this is “The Sailfish Capital of the World,” isn’t it?

The Grand Slam Castaways Jupiter Billfish Tournament being fished by a fleet of 39 boats combined to catch and release 146 sailfish using trolling and live baiting methods. For trolling catches, 300 points are awarded. For live-bait catches, 200 points are awarded.

Leading the way the first day of the two-day event was Outlaw, owned by Neil Subin of Sewall’s Point and skippered by Ian Wichers of Rocky Point, with 16 sailfish caught trolling.

In second with 15 sailfish caught trolling is December’s Light Tackle Sailfish Tournament winner Big Oh, led by Capt. Ronnie Fields of Palm Beach.

Last weekend’s Treasure Coast Sailfish Championship and Pelican Yacht Club Invitational record-setter Bone Shaker, led by Capt. Scott Fawcett of Jensen Beach and owned by Joe Lehner of Stuart, stands third with 12 releases. Eleven teams fished in last week’s Pelican Yacht Club record-smashing event that saw 29 boats combine to catch and release 736 sailfish while trolling.
