TT anglers to defend title

LOCAL VESSEL Gud Thyme are expected to defend their title when the Budget Marine 43rd annual Spice Island Billfish Tournament (SIBT) takes place at the Grenada Yacht Club, Grenada from January 25-29.

Over 250 anglers on a minimum of 50 boats from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, St Lucia, St Vincent/Grenadines, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Canada, the United States and Great Britain are due to visit “the Spice Isle” for the five-day long contest.

A cash prize of US$11,000 will be presented to the angler who reels in a blue marlin heavier than the current event record catch of 669-pounds, which was set in 2006.

Tournament director Gary Clifford said, “for 2012, there is a special prize of a new nine-foot Ultra Light AB Model dinghy with 9.8 horsepower Tohatsu two-stroke outboard engine for the first boat to register a Grand Slam, or release of a Blue Marlin, a White Marlin and a Sailfish in the same day on the same boat.”

Clifford continued, “it starts two miles offshore in 2,000 feet of water of Moliniere Point up the west coast. Reliable areas are often the one kilometre (3,250 feet) and two kilometres (6,500 feet) contour lines at about five and ten miles offshore respectively.

“Some boats head far to the southwest to fish the deep water around Reindeer shoal, while others head north to fish the channel off the islets of Diamond Rock and Isle de Ronde.

“Everyone has their favourite spots and usually fish are being caught in many different locations, not just one,” Clifford added.

Clifford’s 31-foot Innovator Yes Aye will be one of the charters available, while there is free dockage at the Grenada Yacht Club for registrants that bring their own boats.

Fans will be happy to know that they can follow up the event on the online network Facebook.

“Posting to Facebook during the tournament was a major success for us last year and it’s since been copied by other tournaments,” said Clifford.

The SIBT is a qualifying tournament for the IGFA (International Game Fishing Association) Offshore Championship. It is also the start of the Southern Caribbean Billfish Circuit, comprised of six annual tournaments on five southern Caribbean islands.
