Keeping eye on skies

I’M the first to admit I’m not a game fishos rod butt, but it’s game fishing that dominates my thoughts this month in the lead-up to Exmouth’s Gamex and AIBT (Australian International Billfish Tournament).

Steve and I are covering the two events for various media outlets and are running Fishingscool clinics for the juniors. My anticipation was high even at the start of this year when I met quirky fellow fishing journo Sol Bannura at the Kids Hooked On Fishing Tournament in Tuross Head, NSW.

Typically, my conversation turned to the two big comps in the west and Sol’s interest was piqued. He dug his hand into his pocket and pulled out a teardrop-shaped glass bead.

“Try casting this at them,” he said. I confess to looking bemused as I turned the bead over in my hand. “I don’t understand,” I replied. The next day, Sol gave me a couple of beads rigged and ready for action, along with a handful of extras. With further instructions on how best to use them, he sent me on my way with a smile. What an intriguing man, I thought, still looking in wonderment at the baubles in my palm.

Fast-forward to Sunday just gone and a relatively calm day on Darwin waters, when Steve and I took the opportunity to go to South Gutter and hunt for tuna, mackerel and golden snapper.

As I prepared my tackle, I came across those peculiar beads. In the spirit of adventure, I tied one on … might as well pre-fish them here!
