Perfect day leads to tournament win – Sun

For Capt. Randy Towe of SkipJac II, Saturday was one of those rare times when he and his crew could do no wrong.

“It was meant to be,” said Towe of his team’s runaway victory in the Sailfish Challenge. “You always hope to have a perfect day in a tournament and I finally had one.”

SkipJac II, which is owned by Bernard Paul-Hus, went 14 for 14 on sailfish to win $118,450. 4 Aces was second with eight fish.

Towe and Paul-Hus decided to fish out of Lake Worth Inlet, figuring that with a cold front moving through on Saturday, the sailfish would bite better to the north than south of Miami, which is where most of the 72-boat fleet fished.

After catching five sails off Jupiter in the morning, Towe moved south of Lake Worth Inlet and waited, then waited some more. His patience paid off at 2:30 when SkipJac II had five sailfish on at one time and five anglers each caught a fish.

“All the fish stayed together,” Towe said, adding that none of the lines got tangled and no one was in danger of being spooled by a fish.

That quintupleheader gave SkipJac II the lead. It was followed by a tripleheader and a single to give SkipJac II a total of 14 fish — nine of them coming from 2:30-5 p.m.
