Size matters: Four charged with illegal-sized grouper in Florida Keys – Sun

You might say that these anglers not only had short grouper — they also seemed to be a few catfish short of a fish fry.

A deputy on patrol near the Channel 5 Bridge in the Florida Keys saw a pontoon boat with five people on board. As the deputy approached the boat he got a bit chummy, asking them how the fishing was going, according to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The group all said it was going well.

The deputy must of thought these South Florida city slickers were like a fish out of water in the Keys. He asked them to show him the biggest fish they’d caught – the anglers allegedly proudly displayed a 21-inch red grouper.

The deputy apparently then reeled them in a little more, asking them to show him the smallest fish they’d caught. The group showed him an obviously undersized red grouper, the report states.

So the deputy finally asked them to show him all the fish they’d caught.

They took the bait, proudly opening a cooler with six red grouper inside, only one of which was of legal size, according to the release.

When the deputy asked who had caught the fish, they replied that all of them had.

So the deputy asked if they could each show him which fish they had caught, and asked if they wanted a picture taken with their fish.

They all agreed; the deputy then handed them each their respective fish and took their pictures one at a time, according to the report.

Four of them, John Sala, 61, of Dania; Marcel Chiforan, 47, of Coral Springs, Erin Horvath, 19, of Hollywood and Marian Borz, 28, of Davie, were then cited for possessing undersized red grouper. All four were also warned for having no valid fishing license.
