Volusia 12th, Flagler 43rd in Florida boating accidents – Daytona Beach News

Volusia County ranked 12th and Flagler County 43rd in the state for the number of boating accidents last year, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The annual report released Wednesday states 18 reportable accidents occurred in Volusia county in 2011. They resulted in 12 injuries and one death. No one was killed or injured in either of the two Flagler County accidents reported.

Statewide, officials said 67 people died and 431 people were injured in boating mishaps last year.

The main cause of boating deaths in 2011, according to the report, was boaters falling overboard.

Such was the case in the death of Calvin Jackson on Nov. 3, 2011.

Wildlife commission spokeswoman Joy Hill said Jackson was fishing in a pond in Port Orange when something started his johnboat rocking, causing him to fall out and drown.

Wildlife commission Investigator Andy Bickel said life jackets could prevent most drowning deaths.

Volusia County has 26,849 recreational boats registered, while Flagler County has 5,173, the report states.

According to the report, alcohol or drug use played a role in 15 percent of the boating deaths. Most of the victims in fatal boating accidents were male.

Officials found that Monroe County, which includes the Florida Keys and parts of Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve, had both the highest number of boating accidents and the highest number of boating injuries in Florida.

Wildlife commission officials said 28 boating deaths have been reported in the state so far this year.

Florida leads the nation with 922,491 registered vessels.
