Red-hot fishing in Southwest Florida – Sun

On the second day of the trip, Chupp caught a Super West Coast Grand Slam consisting of a snook, redfish, tarpon and permit.

She caught the first three species using live finger mullet in river mouths south of Chokoloskee Island. The tarpon weighed an estimated 60 pounds.

Sanders, of Davie, then headed into the Gulf of Mexico to fish for permit around shallow wrecks and rockpiles. Chupp caught a 25-plus-pounder on a live crab and a Star spinning rod to complete her slam, only the 25th in the 15 years that Sanders has been guiding out of Chokoloskee.

Fish of the week

Jenny Schell, 14, caught her first tarpon, a 41/2-footer, using a live shrimp and 12-pound monofilament line fishing with her father, Rick, in North Biscayne Bay.

Santos Solis, of Vero Beach, caught a total of 10 bass weighing 47 pounds, 15 ounces Saturday and Sunday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Bama Division super tournament on Lake Okeechobee out of Okeechobee. Solis earned $6,743 flipping a 1-ounce Medlock Jig with a black-and-blue Gambler Ugly Otter.

“I had found an area on Friday that I knew would produce the fish that I needed to dominate this tournament. It was a reed line on the south end of the lake right near Cochran’s Pass,” said Solis. “That was the only area that I fished throughout the whole tournament.

“The area was pretty consistent for me. I boated eight keepers on Saturday and eight keepers on Sunday.”

Don DeMott, of Boca Raton, was second with 10 bass weighing 44-14 to win $3,371.

“I caught them pitching a Gambler Crawdaddy on a 5/16ths-ounce weight to round reeds on the Shoal and swimming a Ninja Jig in the same areas,” DeMott said. “The fish appeared to be pre-spawn and we caught a lot each day.”

Brandon Medlock, of Lake Placid, was third at 41-11 to win $2,248.

Charles Alley, of Stuart, had 10 bass totaling 32-11 to win the co-angler title and $3,372. Thad Talley, of Pompano Beach, was seventh in the co-angler division with seven bass weighing 24-14.

Mike Ryan and Bruce Austin caught 22.69 pounds of bass Sunday to win the King of the Glades club tournament at Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. Mike Lendl and Mike Barnard were second at 18.72, including the big fish of 6.31, followed by Nick Hoinig and Kevin McNally at 15.28, Taylor Nekolny and Noah King at 13.21 and Mike Slappy and Jack Gleeson at 12.87. A lot of fish were caught on Lunker Candy-colored, weighted Gambler EZ Swimmers and Zoom Horny Toads cast from the flats into cuts in the west canal.

Charles Forschini, of Miami, caught 15 peacock bass up to 7 pounds fly fishing in the C-1 Canal with Capt. Alan Zaremba. Zaremba and Ted Sander, of Cooper City, caught 55 largemouth bass using Gambler ribbontail worms in the L-29. Nelson and Georgia Rozakia, of Margate, caught nine peacocks and a largemouth using floating Rapalas in the C-4.
