New Englander Wins Herman Lucerne Backcountry Challenge

(Oct. 01, 2012 – ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys)… Rich Campiola of Windham, N.H., caught each of seven target species to win the 2012 Herman Lucerne Memorial Tournament that ended Sept. 23.

Anglers fished within the boundaries of Everglades National Park for snook, snapper, redfish, trout, tarpon, bonefish and black drum.

Campiola also earned the high-point angler title. He fished with Captain Mike Makowski of Key Largo, Fla.

For the fifth year in a row the title of junior champion went to Ridge Murphy, guided by Captain Matt Lofton of Homestead, Fla. Murphy caught and released all the target species except bonefish.

Collin Ross of Coral Gables, Fla., garnered the unguided fly division champion title and was the tournament’s top male angler. In the guided fly division, top honors went to Honson Lau of Miami, fishing with Key Largo’s Captain Jeremy Alderman.

The top unguided female angler was Stephanie Parson of Naples, Fla., with Betsy Bullard of Tavernier, Fla., clinching the top guided female angler spot. She fished with Captain Larry Sydnor of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

A field of 84 anglers competed in the annual fundraising challenge that celebrates the late Lucerne’s affinity for the area, enjoying the beauty of the Everglades.
