A New Year’s Resolution: Fish More

By John Merwin

So here we are on the last day of 2012, traditionally a day for looking backward and then looking ahead. The backward part is easier.

The year just past was, for me, a good fishing year. It began with a Florida Keys trip in April, which also included flyfishing for peacock bass in some canals near Miami. The peacocks were fun, unusual, and something I’d never done before. The most fun I had last year, though, was flyfishing for smallmouths out of Wheaton’s Lodge in southeastern Maine. The bass were eager to whack surface bugs, fought hard, and had me smiling all day long.

Looking ahead is made more difficult just by reading the newspaper every morning. Most of the news is bad or worse. This reminds me of what my late friend and FS columnist Ed Zern once wrote:

“I get all the truth I need in the newspaper every morning, and every chance I get I go fishing, or swap stories with fishermen, to get the taste of it out of my mouth.”

Whether or not I go fishing on any particular day next year is completely inconsequential in the general scheme of things. Being on or in the water does make me feel better in general though, so I guess one resolution I take from that is to fish more next year. As resolutions go, that one will be easy to keep.

It doesn’t have to be exotic fishing or somehow expensive. A day’s good fishing locally might cost me $10 or $20, including fuel for the truck and boat. And that’s well worth the respite fishing offers from the dire headlines on any particular day.
