Two-headed shark: Live bull shark fetus with 2 heads netted off Florida Keys

A two-headed shark live fetus was netted by a fisherman off the Florida Keys, who handed it over to scientists to study. This two-headed shark is an extremely rare find and although approximately six others are documented world-wide, this is the first bull shark with two heads ever seen, according to Live Science on Monday, March 25, 2013.

The fishermen caught a bull shark while fishing of the Keys of Florida and he discovered something else inside his net. The shark had a live fetus with two heads. The study of this two-headed shark was published online today in the Journal of Fish Biology.

This bull shark embryo started to divide into twins while still forming, but the process stopped before it was completed. “It’s a very rare mutation that occurs across different animals, including humans, reports Michael Wagner, a study co-author and researcher at Michigan State University.

The two-headed shark would most likely not have lived long in the wild. As a predator, you need to move fast and speed wouldn’t be an asset of a two-headed shark. The shark’s body was stunted because all the energy went into the “double noggins” said Wagner. This would also cause the shark to have a short life span. This goes against the old adage of “two heads are better than one!”
