Redbone Keys trilogy about to get going

One of the Florida Keys’ longest-running charity fishing events kicks off its 26th fall season with the Robert James Sales Redbone Celebrity Trilogy to help fund medical researchers to catch the cure for cystic fibrosis. The tournaments:/ppLI Sept. 6 to 8: 24th annual S.L.A.M., (Southernmost Light Tackle Anglers Masters), Key West, for permit, tarpon and bonefish.

Gary Ellis, “$1.2 million was raised from last year’s tournaments, bringing awareness to the genetic disease and to our great Keys spirit.”/ppIn 25 years of Redbone events, more than $18 million has been raised for CF research./ppThe Redbone began as a small Keys tournament to help CF patients like Gary and Susan Ellis’ daughter Nicole. The late Baseball Hall of Fame slugger Ted Williams, an Islamorada resident and avid fisherman, inspired the Ellises and helped attract his celebrity friends. Through the efforts of guides, anglers, sponsors and volunteers, they raised $16,000 at that first event. It soon grew into a series of tournaments./ppNicole is now 28 and an international marketing director for Rich Products./ppToday, under the guidance of the Ellises, the Redbone name has grown into 28 catch-and-release competitions for a variety of local fish species. Anglers fish as a team or with a celebrity and are professionally guided within four distinct fishing series:/ppLI The original Redbone celebrity Keys fall trilogy./ppLI The Redbone Red*Trout series in five southeast coastal cities./ppLI The Redbone’s Bahamas Bonefish series./ppLI The Redbone@Large events in the U.S., Costa Rica and Mexico./ppFor more information visit www.redbone.org or call the Redbone office at 664-2002.
