A deadly four days in the Florida Keys

It was a deadly Friday through Monday in the Keys, with one body found in Marathon woods and another in a Tavernier park, in addition to a man dying after falling off his boat off Key Largo and another man dying while diving off Big Pine Key./ppThe Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says the following happened:/ppLI In Tavernier about 12:30 p.m. Monday, a scooter rider southbound on U.S. 1 saw the body in Memorial Park around mile marker 91 and called the Sheriff’s Office. Detectives say they’ve identified the body as that of a 68-year-old homeless man and are trying to find his next of kin to notify them./ppThere were no obvious signs of foul play and detectives say they believe he may have died of natural causes./ppLI Also Monday, an Orlando man died scuba diving off Big Pine about 6:15 p.m./ppDeputy Aaron Coller responded to the Dolphin Marina on Little Torch Key to reports a diver, not breathing, was being brought in from offshore./ppThe 65-year-old man, Michael White, and a friend were on their third dive of the day in 15 to 20 feet of water at Big Pine Shoal. The friend said they surfaced and were taking off their equipment on different sides of the boat but when he spoke to the victim, there was no response./ppHe looked around and spotted dive gear floating a short distance away, then realized it was his friend. He swam out to pull him back to the boat and got him out of the water. He called for help on his VHF radio and two boats that were a few miles away responded, including a TowBoatUS boat. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed on the TowBoatUS vessel, but the victim was later pronounced dead at Fishermen’s Community Hospital in Marathon./ppLI Saturday, a Miami man died after he jumped in the water from his boat for a swim near Carysfort off Key Largo and was swept away by the current./ppLuis Fernandez, 43, was aboard a 17-foot vessel with his girlfriend, fishing. When he jumped in the water to cool off about 5:45 p.m., his girlfriend said the current began sweeping him away./ppFernandez grabbed for a fishing line they had in the water, but it broke. She tried to throw him a life preserver, but Fernandez was too far away to reach it. His girlfriend, also from Miami, told police it was the first time she’d ever been on a boat and didn’t know how to operate it./ppThe Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded and found Fernandez’s body./ppLI Friday, a man’s body was found in woods off Sombrero Beach Road in Marathon at 11:30 a.m./ppA member of a Marathon Public Works crew working in the area said he smelled something, walked a short distance into the woods and found the man dead on his back./ppDetectives say they have a tentative identification, but the body was decomposed and the Medical Examiner’s Office will have to do further work to confirm it./ppThe Medical Examiner’s Office plans autopsies on all four bodies.
