Women’s fishing academy draws closer

Women can learn to become anglers or polish existing angling skills at the Florida Keys’ Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing! girls’ getaway, an award-winning weekend university set for Nov. 15 through 17.

During the program’s nearly 20-year history, more than 7,000 women seeking experiential vacations have gained more confidence on the water as they apply learned fishing skills in offshore, bottom, inshore and fly fishing.

Islamorada serves as the immersion seminar’s setting. Participants gain proficiency in marine and habitat conservation, releasing, knot tying, bait rigging, spin and net casting, boat and trailer handling, stand-up fish-fighting techniques, gaffing, removing hooks and filleting the catch.

Ladies learn techniques from some of the world’s most prominent fishing captains including Stu Apte, Bob Jones, Rick Rodriguez, Lee Lavery and other guest guides.

The seminar kicks off Nov. 15 with a 6:30 to 9 p.m. meet-and-greet networking social for participants and guests at the Tavernier Elks Lodge, mile marker 92.6. The event includes a fundraising raffle, silent auction and pot-luck appetizer contest.

Nov. 16’s action begins at 8:30 a.m. with classroom sessions followed by lunch and hands-on activities until 4:30 p.m. At day’s end, participants can enjoy food, fun and local art at the Redbone Gallery, 200 Morada Way oceanside.

The following morning, ladies can opt for an additional inshore or offshore fishing adventure out of Whale Harbor Marina, mile marker 83.5. Anglers can fish from a party (drift) boat, try offshore sportfishing or an inshore flats boat or experience a guided kayak fishing trip.

“Our Keys University offers a unique vacation getaway where women can learn, network and enjoy the fabulous Florida Keys and its remarkable fishing,” said Betty Bauman, Ladies! Let’s go Fishing.

Regular registration is $145. Fees include classroom book and instruction, use of equipment, welcome reception, lunch, goody bags and more. Friday and Monday bonus fishing days are offered for an additional fee. Classes fill quickly and all Keys University rates can be found atladiesletsgofishing.com.

Specially priced weekend accommodations are available. The fundraisers help support the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation.
